Submit your paper here.

Full Paper

Six pages in the standard IEEE format are allowed for each paper, including figures. The price for each extra page is 60€.

Final version of the papers must be written in English following these IEEE guidelines.

Authors must remove their names from the submitted papers, and should take reasonable care not to indirectly disclose their identity. Three program committee members will be assigned to review each paper. Acceptance will be based on the paper's significance, technical quality, clarity, relevance and originality.

Accepted papers will be scheduled for presentation, which requires that at least one of the authors should register at the Conference and present the paper.

Similarly to previous editions, a special section in a specialized journal will be set up to accommodate the publication of extended versions of selected papers. Therefore, authors of the best conference papers will be invited to submit an extended contribution to be published in a special issue of the Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems, from Springer or in a special section of Industrial Robot and Sensor Review, from Emerald Group Publishing.

Program

Invited Speaker: Rainer Bischoff, KUKA’s Corporate Research department, Augsburg - Germany
Talk: Designing robot competitions with a benefit for the industry

Abstract: The talk will give insight in how KUKA maintains its leadership in industrial and professional service robotics technology and innovation through collaboration with research institutes and academia, and in particular, by helping to design robot competitions. Competitions in robotics are an excellent vehicle for advancing the state of the art and evaluating new algorithms and technologies in the context of a common problem domain. However, there is no regular and established process of technology transfer of research projects to actual applications of industrial and commercial impact. To seize the opportunities of competitions, several EC projects were launched that specified benchmarking challenges and methods and that suggested ways of evaluating the performance of single modules, subsystems and functions of integrated systems. This talk will present results of ongoing and recently finished projects and shed light on best practices at KUKA in designing and executing competitions with a benefit for the robotics industry and the factory of the future.

Biography: Dr. Rainer Bischoff is Head of KUKA’s Corporate Research department, responsible for research and technology development preceding product development. Dr. Bischoff received his „Doktor-Ingenieur“ degree from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for his contributions towards the development of personal robots. He serves as Vice-President Industry of euRobotics AISBL – the European Robotics Association he helped to create to unite European roboticists and to engage in a public-private partnership with the European Commission. For leadership and outstanding contributions to the cooperation of academia and industry, and for managing and promoting significant technology transfer in the area of industrial and service robotics he was granted the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Early Career Award in 2012. In 2015, he received the IROS Toshio Fukuda Young Professional Award for his technical contributions to the personal robotic assistant HERMES and his effort in uniting the European Robotics Community.

Bragança

TRÁS-OS-MONTES, region designated as "Wonderful kingdom" by the Portuguese author Miguel Torga.

The district of Bragança is located in Trás-os-Montes, in the northeast of Portugal, an attractive region known for its traditions, handicraft, gastronomy and its landscape. The regions located in the north part of the district, more cold and highest in altitude, are known as Terra Fria Transmontana and present a landscape dominated by plateaus and mountains, with deep and narrow valleys. More to the south, we find the region known as Terra Quente Trasmontana, of milder climate, marked by the Douro river and the valleys of its tributary rivers. In this region you can visit the Natural Park of Montesinho, the International Douro Park or the Protected Landscape of Azibo, where you can be marvel at the scenery with a diverse flora and fauna.

Those who visit the northeastern of Portugal have the opportunity to discover an ancient culture whose roots are lost in Pagan antiquity, with its traditional festivities such as the Boys' Festivity ("festa dos rapazes"), the Caretos and the war dances of Pauliteiros accompanied with rhythmic music from bagpipes. You can also admire the traditional handicrafts, including works with copper, leather and wood, weaving, basketry and the famous decorative masks.

You will also have the opportunity to taste the gastronomic delights typical from this region, especially the traditional "alheira", the typical beef steak known as "posta à Mirandesa", lamb from Montesinho, trout fish, game meat (partridge, wild boar, and hare) and the "Folar de Bragança" prepared with bread-like dough and a variety of different meat.

In the city of Bragança, there are several monuments and museums you can visit. Do not miss a walk in the castle, passing by the Watchtower, the "Domus Municipalis", a singular building in the Iberian Peninsula in Romanesque architecture, and several religious monuments.

Take a quick look at the video and see the "wonderful kingdom" that is waiting for you!
